Day 4: International Day of Banks – The Modern-day Bearers of Gold
Just as one of the Three Wise Men offered gold as a gift, today’s banks play an important role in safeguarding and growing the financial “gold” of individuals and businesses alike. This International Day of Banks, we recognise the role of banks in:
- Financing sustainable development
- Improving the standard of living in member states
- Providing financial security for people
- Providing access to financial services
- Fostering entrepreneurship
- Ensuring vulnerable populations have access to resources
What is International Day of Banks?
Established by the UN General Assembly and first celebrated widely in 2020, International Day of Banks highlights the essential role financial institutions play in fostering sustainable development.
Banks are integral to accomplishing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They drive global cooperation, provide innovative financial solutions, and uphold ethical practices to address modern economic challenges.
On this day, Governments, Financial Institutions, and individuals come together to celebrate through events such as educational content and policy discussions. The aim? To showcase how sustainable finance contributes to a fairer and more resilient global economy.
How is Portman recognising the event?
In spirit of our advent calendar, we’re dedicating today to supporting your business banking needs. Whether you’re considering a switch or exploring funding options, we’ve compiled some helpful resources:

Day 6: Spreading Cheer with Festive Finance Jokes! 🎄🎉
It is Day 6 of our Advent Calendar, and we are turning up the festive fun with a dose of Christmas cracker humor!
A short history of cracker jokes:
Confectioner Tom Smith invented the Christmas Cracker in 1847 to sell his sugared almonds. Originally he added mottos and love notes inside twisted paper and created the ‘bang’ when inspired by the crackling of log fires at Christmas. In the 1930s Smith’s sons replaced his love poems with jokes, and so the tradition began.
Share a laugh and join our competition to find the best business or finance-related Christmas joke or pun.
🎅 Here is one we’ve not heard before:
What do you call a group of chessers bragging about their latest gambit in a hotel lobby?
A. Chess nuts boasting in an open foyer.
Think you can do better? We are awarding bonus points for creativity!
How to Join the Fun 🎉
Got a cracker of a joke? Here is how to get involved:
- Message us on LinkedIn with your entry.
- Respond to our Day 6 Advent Post on LinkedIn with your business or finance, joke or pun.
Considering using humour in your business marketing?
Recent research shows 90% of consumers are more likely to remember a funny ad, especially when competition is tough and there are proven case studies of growing market share using humour based on recall. But if you take this route, remember:
- Don’t try too hard with cheap gags that don’t connect to the brand
- Be culturally relevant, surprising and entertaining
- Be brave but be sensitive to today’s world
- Avoid being perceived as immature, offensive or alienating certain customer groups

Day 9: Avoid the Naughty List on International Anti-Corruption Day!
Day 9 of our Advent coincides with International Anti-Corruption Day, a globally recognised effort to combat corruption and promote transparency in all sectors. With finance, you need a business you can trust, so at Portman, we do things properly. Unlike many brokers who might think they don’t need them, we have in-house legal counsel, a compliance team and a Head of Financial Crime. We are committed to supporting ethical business practices and ensuring our processes help businesses thrive while staying off the “Naughty List.”
What is International Anti-Corruption Day?
Established by the United Nations in 2003, International Anti-Corruption Day highlights the harmful effects of corruption on societies and economies. It marks the anniversary of the UN Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC), the first legally binding international treaty to address corruption on a global scale.
This day serves as a powerful reminder of the need for transparency, accountability, and integrity in both public and private sectors.
How Portman Upholds Anti-Corruption Values
As a business finance provider, integrity is at the heart of everything we do. Corruption undermines trust, disrupts economies, and harms communities—values we are committed to protecting.
Here are key steps we take to promote transparency and compliance:
- Corruption Risk Management: Proactively identifying and mitigating risks.
- Conflict of Interest Training: Ensuring ethical decision-making.
- Policy Administration: Enforcing anti-bribery clauses and transparent procedures.
- Money Laundering Prevention: Educating staff and monitoring for suspicious activities.
- Whistleblower Protections: Encouraging reporting with safeguards in place.
Our dedicated compliance team, led by Simon Williams (Director of Operations and Compliance) and Andrew Thomas (Financial Crime Manager), ensures our policies uphold the highest standards.
How Can Your Business Avoid People On The Naughty List?
Want to make a difference this International Anti-Corruption Day? Here are actionable steps for your business:
- Raise Awareness – Use social media and team discussions to highlight the impact of corruption.
- Support Anti-Corruption Initiatives – Partner with or donate to organizations working in this space.
- Promote Transparency – Advocate for honest practices in your workplace or industry.
- Report Corruption – Utilize whistleblower channels to address unethical behavior.
- Educate Your Team – Provide training on anti-corruption laws and compliance practices.
By participating in this important cause, you help protect the integrity of your business and contribute to a fairer economy for all.
Corruption hinders sustainable development and undermines trust. Let us work together to promote ethical practices, ensuring a brighter future for businesses and communities alike. 🌍✨

Day 11: Spreading Cheer with Christmas Parties & Employee Satisfaction! 🎉😊
It’s Day 11 of our Advent Calendar, and the theme is Christmas Parties! Whether your business has already celebrated or you’re still waiting for the big event, this festive season is a perfect time to focus on what keeps any business thriving – happy employees!

At Portman, we value our team members, and today we’re sharing why employee satisfaction is vital to business success. Plus, if you’re thinking about starting fresh in the new year, we might just tempt you to join our growing family!
What is employee satisfaction?
Employee satisfaction refers to the overall happiness employees feel about their job and workplace. It encompasses various aspects, including work-life balance, recognition, opportunities for growth, and workplace culture.
Why Does Employee Satisfaction Matter?🤔
Happy employees aren’t just a “nice-to-have” but an essential for a great business.
Here’s why:
- Boosts Productivity – Satisfied employees work harder, smarter, and with more enthusiasm.
- Experience – Longer serving staff simply know more, can train others and can solve more problems.
- Enhances Customer Satisfaction – Happy employees deliver better service, leading to happier, loyal customers.
- Fosters Positive Culture – A satisfied workforce should be collaborative and motivated, they will think of ideas for you and help push the business forward.
- Provides Competitive Advantage – Businesses with high-performing teams gain an edge over their competitors.
- Reduces Turnover – When employees are happy, they stay longer, reducing hiring and training costs.
What Contributes to Job Satisfaction? 😊✨
Wondering how to keep your team happy?
Focus on these key areas:
- Respect & Transparency – Foster open communication and mutual respect among all employees.
- Clear Structure – Your teams will do best if they know exactly what’s expected of them and the framework you want them to work within. Make sure you also have regular catch-ups to shape or recognise performance.
- Motivation & Fair Hierarchies – Create an inspiring environment free from toxicity.
- Career Progression – Offer clear paths for growth and development.
- Comprehensive Benefits – Provide attractive perks, from healthcare to flexibility and holiday allowances.
- Fair Pay – Ensure salaries and pensions reflect the value employees bring to your business.

Day 12: Happy Christmas Jumper Day! 👕🎄
It’s Day 12 of our Christmas Advent and we would like to wish you a Happy Christmas Jumper Day! ✨ Are you and your business taking part?
Christmas Jumper Day was created back in 2012 by Save the Children and has reportedly raised over £30m for the charity so far. But why have companies embraced it so much and, like us, enjoy posting pictures of colleagues in their jumpers instead of their daily suits? Because we all want to humanise our brand. Hey look, we’re nice people too, but why is that important?
Why humanise your brand or business?
In many instances people buy from people, particularly in a business-to-business environment. Sure, convenience, product consistency and speed all matter, but assuming you’re selling a product or service that the customer can get elsewhere, why you?
Other things being equal, buying from people we like makes a difference. But when you can’t meet everyone, how do you bring the human element to your business?
Being personal involves letting your guard down, not everyone is comfortable with that. But people largely enjoy making connections and even a transactional relationship is an investment of our time and self. With a growing trend of ethical purchase, buying from businesses people believe in and the power of social media to shape your customers’ view, it’s important to consider how much this could benefit your business.
So what does humanising a brand mean?
In short, be real, be genuine, and be honest. Admit flaws, be open to feedback and improvement. Engage with customers, don’t hide behind processes or systems. Listen, research and observe. Try to understand their perspective. Go out of your way to help the people paying your wages.
Then, adopt a more personal tone across your communication and marketing efforts. Drop the corporate front and the jargon. Your business should be one that’s understanding of your customer’s situation and the problem they are trying to solve. You want your customers to say “these guys are real people, and they get it”.
Of course, there are instances where this isn’t important. But think about the venues that accommodate special requests or that corporate event where you met with customers over drinks. What about the online retailers who leave messages and sweets in your parcel, or the bottles of gin that tell its origin story. These are memorable, and when you think about it, customers probably care more than you realise.
Build your marketing in a way that builds connection and demonstrates an understanding of your audience.
Why does it matter?
Well in the end we’re all here to sell. Customers prefer to buy from someone they like. That means loyalty, repeat business, advocacy and referrals. Make them feel good about buying from you and they will sell your business for you.
If you’re a faceless, impersonal business, it’s much easier to leave you and shop elsewhere.
Day 13: The 12 Days of Christmas – 12 Pearls of Wisdom 🎵
It’s Day 13 of our Advent Calendar, and with just 12 days to go until Christmas, what better way to celebrate than with some Portman Carols of Wisdom? Our team has shared their best business and finance tips to inspire and guide you during this festive season.

Mark Woolf [ Head of Design ] – “You’ll miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. Iterate, refine, scrap it, breathe, start over…repeat. It’s rare you’ll find the answer immediately, don’t fight the process, embrace it.”
Paul Plumridge [ Finance Manager ] – “If you don’t have time to do it right the first time, how will you ever have time to correct it later.”

What’s the Origin of the ‘12 Days of Christmas’?
The iconic Christmas carol ‘The 12 Days of Christmas’ is steeped in tradition and mystery. Believed to date back to 18th-century England, the song’s symbolic gifts may have roots in French folklore or Christian teaching.
Each day, starting on Christmas Day and ending on Twelfth Night (January 5), represents a gift given by a “true love,” with interpretations ranging from literal to metaphorical. Whatever the origins, the song has become a beloved part of the festive season, symbolizing joy, abundance, and giving.

Day 14: Inside Santa’s Workshop – What Happens at Portman 🎅
Welcome to Day 14 of our Advent Calendar! Today, we’re opening the doors to Santa’s Workshop to explore the essential role brokers play in securing the perfect financial fit for businesses. At Portman, we believe understanding what brokers do is crucial for anyone travelling through the business finance journey.
What happens in our workshop?
Ever wondered what goes on inside Portman? What do our ‘elves’ do for you when you submit your loan enquiry. Get an understanding of how we do our job and why that makes a difference to your business.
Plus, Freddie Davidson, Senior Broker at Portman, explains the first conversation you’ll have when you enquire with us.
What happens when I apply for a business loan?
What is a broker❓
A business finance broker acts as an intermediary between businesses and lenders. Brokers help businesses match funding solutions with their goals. They work well because they are able to search a wider proportion of the finance market than businesses could on their own, including many specialist lenders that do not deal directly with businesses themselves.
As a broker (and lender) Portman also understands which specialist lenders have the appetite to lend to certain businesses or finance certain assets, meaning you are more likely to get an acceptance for finance through Portman than your bank.
Why Use a Broker for Business Finance?
Brokers can be game-changers for businesses by:
- Securing funding – Finding the best funding options and negotiating terms on your behalf.
- Saving time – Managing the complexities of the funding process so you can focus on running your business.
- Competitive rates – Using their expertise and relationships to secure rates and terms tailored to your business.
- Syndicated deals – Combine funding from multiple sources to fund your whole project.
- Acceptances – We know who’s most likely to fund your catering equipment, finance a new machine, or boost your cashflow without requiring a personal guarantee and we’ll pitch them on your behalf to improve your chances of getting funded.
Why Choose Portman as Your Broker? ✨🤝
At Portman, we combine the benefits of being both a lender and a broker. This dual approach gives you the best of both worlds:
- Flexible Solutions
- We underwrite agreements, lend our own money, and arrange finance leases directly when needed.
- We also access the wider finance market to secure bespoke solutions tailored to your unique business needs.
- Market Expertise
- Having supported SMEs since 2007, we know which lenders specialize in different industries, trading histories, and asset types.
- Our market knowledge ensures we match you with the right lender to improve your chances of success while minimizing unnecessary credit checks.
- Effortless Process
- We take one set of details, collect your documents, and handle the market research, negotiations, and paperwork.
- This means you save time, avoid hassle, and receive a seamless experience from start to finish.
- Bespoke Finance Options
- Portman can combine products from multiple lenders to create a finance package uniquely suited to your needs (including syndicated deals).
- This flexibility ensures that you receive the best possible solution instead of a “yes” or “no” from a single provider.

The Role of a Broker at Portman
At Portman, we blend cutting-edge technology with a personal touch to offer the best of both worlds:

The Tradition Behind Christmas Tree Decorations
Did you know…
Decorating Christmas trees is a cherished tradition with deep-rooted history and symbolism:
- The Symbolism – Evergreens represent hope, renewal, and everlasting life, while red and blue ornaments symbolize key aspects of the festive season.
- The Origins – The practice began in 16th-century Germany, where trees were adorned with carvings and food for luck and spring blessings.
- The Introduction to England – Prince Albert popularized Christmas trees in England in 1840, but the tradition began earlier with Queen Charlotte in 1800.
- Superstitions – Some say decorations must stay up until Twelfth Night to avoid bad luck, while others recommend taking them down before New Year.
Just as decorations elevate the holiday spirit, a well-designed retail or hospitality space can transform customer experiences and enhance business success.

Fun Facts & History of Festive Games
Christmas games have long been a cherished part of the holiday season, with their roots stretching back to ancient traditions. Here’s a glimpse into their fascinating history:
- Medieval Traditions – In the Middle Ages, families looked forward to games like Hunt the Slipper, where a player in the center of a circle held a shoe and tried to keep it hidden.
- Relaxed Laws – During King Henry VIII’s reign, commoners could enjoy games like dice, cards, and bowls, which were otherwise restricted for much of the year.
- Pagan Roots – Long before Christianity, pagans celebrated the winter solstice in late December, marking the return of longer days with feasting and games.
- Roman Influence – Medieval Christmas customs drew from Roman Saturnalia, where gift-giving and role reversals (servants acting as masters) were common.
Some Popular Christmas Games Today…
- Pin the Nose on the Reindeer: A festive spin on “Pin the Tail on the Donkey,” this game is perfect for kids.
- Candy Cane Hunt: Hide candy canes around your house and see who can find the most!
- 20 Questions: Guess the Christmas-themed object by asking only “Yes” or “No” questions.
- Who Am I?: Players guess which Christmas character they are based on clues.
Failing that, hide all the kids presents around the house then relax whilst they spend all day looking for them.

Day 19: Syndicated Deals – The Christmas Special of Business Finance 📺🎄
It’s Day 19 of our Christmas Advent, and today we’re putting the spotlight on syndicated funding—the business equivalent of your favourite Christmas TV specials. Just like these festive classics, syndicated deals bring together the best elements in perfect harmony to deliver something truly special for your business.
The History of Christmas TV Specials
Christmas TV specials have been a beloved holiday tradition since the 1950s, showcasing creativity, collaboration, and a touch of magic. Here’s how they’ve evolved over the years:
- 📺 Early Specials – The earliest Christmas specials featured adaptations of stories like A Christmas Carol or holiday-themed variety shows hosted by celebrities such as Perry Como and Florence Henderson.
- 📺 Animated Classics – From Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer to How the Grinch Stole Christmas and A Charlie Brown Christmas, the 1960s to 1980s saw animated specials rise to iconic status.
- 📺 Live-Action Favorites – Prime-time specials hosted by legends like Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, and Andy Williams created cozy, nostalgic moments with sets full of “snow,” holiday music, and witty banter.
- 📺 Opera on TV – Amahl and the Night Visitors was the first opera written specifically for television, airing annually from 1951 to 1966.
- 📺 UK’s Alternative Christmas Messages – Since 1993, Channel 4 in the UK has broadcasted alternative Christmas messages by different figures, providing a fresh take on holiday reflections.
Much like these holiday specials, syndicated deals are about combining the strengths of many to create something greater than the sum of their parts.
What Is a Syndicated Deal?
A syndicated deal is a collaborative financing solution where multiple lenders come together to provide the capital needed for a business. This is especially useful for businesses requiring larger sums of funding or those with complex requirements that one lender alone might not be able to meet. It’s also a great way to spread the cost of a project by using asset finance where possible to bring the rates down.
For a clear breakdown of syndicated deals and their benefits, check out our helpful resources:
- Definition – Finance Glossary Term: Syndicated Deals
- Article – Understanding Syndicated Finance
How Can Portman Help?
At Portman, we understand that one size doesn’t fit all when it comes to business finance. Syndicated deals are not something that banks or individual lenders can do easily. It takes a broker with a certain expertise and a good business case to find specialist lenders that will fund the different elements of your project. But at Portman, if a syndicated deal suits your needs then that’s what we’ll do.
Here’s how we make it happen:
- Dedicated Account Manager – You’ll work with an experienced account manager who will take the time to understand your business requirements.
- Customised Funding Solutions – If a single lender can’t provide the full funding amount, we’ll syndicate your loan by combining offers from multiple lenders to secure the capital you need.
- Expert Guidance – We’ll handle the heavy lifting, negotiating with lenders and tailoring the syndicated deal to suit your business goals.
Why Choose Syndicated Deals?
Syndicated financing is a powerful tool for businesses looking to:
- Access larger amounts of capital.
- Diversify funding sources to reduce risk.
- Benefit from competitive rates by leveraging the strengths of multiple lenders.
- Whether you’re planning to scale your operations, invest in new assets, or tackle an ambitious project, a syndicated deal could be the perfect fit.
This holiday season, think of syndicated deals as the ultimate collaboration just like your favourite Christmas TV specials that bring beloved characters together for a heartwarming story. With Portman by your side, you can unlock tailored funding solutions designed to meet your needs. 🎄✨
Day 20: Secret Santa – The Hidden Breadth of Asset Finance🎁🎅
On Day 20 of our Christmas Advent, we’re here to act as your Secret Santa and reveal one of the best-kept secrets in business: Asset Finance!
Wait – You’ve heard of it?! But did you know that asset finance stretches far beyond what many people realise? Far from being limited to heavy machinery, it’s a versatile, cost-effective solution that can transform your business, allowing our customers to spread the cost of anything from fridges to furniture, security systems to air-con. Let’s unwrap its hidden benefits together!
The History of Secret Santa
The tradition of Secret Santa has become a global favourite, celebrated in offices, among friends, and even online. But where did it all start?
- American Philanthropy – The modern Secret Santa concept is often credited to Larry Dean Stewart, a Kansas City philanthropist who anonymously gave money to people in need during the 1970s.
- Scandinavian Roots – The tradition of Julklapp or “Christmas knock” in Scandinavia involved leaving anonymous gifts on doorsteps with a playful knock before running away, a clear precursor to today’s Secret Santa.
- The Spirit of Giving – Nicholas of Myra, later canonized as Saint Nicholas, embodies the holiday spirit of generosity and surprise, having rescued families from poverty by secretly throwing pouches of coins through the windows of the poor in his village.
What Does Asset Finance Cover?
OK, so we’re focusing on the secret aspect here because business owners are typically not aware that asset finance offers a wide range of applications. Here’s a quick breakdown of what asset finance can help you fund:
- Hard Assets – Equipment, machinery, vehicles, and plant—big-ticket items critical to your operations.
- Soft Assets – Technology, electrical works, furniture, plumbing, catering equipment, warehouse racking, beauty machines, shelving, brewing equipment, and almost any aspect of an interior fit-out.
Asset finance is a type of secured loan, more security typically means rates better than the equivalent unsecured cash loan. Portman goes beyond the basics and as both a lender and broker, we work with you to find the right funding solution for almost any asset, whether it’s a commercial kitchen or a fleet of vehicles.
Types of Asset Finance – Which Fits Your Needs? 🤔
To give you an overview, here are six types of asset finance and how they can work for your business:
- Hire Purchase – Own the asset outright after paying a deposit and making fixed-term repayments. Ideal for long-term investments.
- Finance Lease – Rent the asset from the lender with the option to return, sell, or continue leasing at reduced rates after the term ends.
- Operating Lease – Lease the asset without taking on ownership responsibilities, with the lender handling maintenance and repairs.
- Asset Refinance – Unlock cash by refinancing assets you already own. Great for releasing funds at good rates.
- Contract Hire / Vehicle Finance – Tailored for vehicles, this finance will give you some of our most lowest rates
- Business Contract Purchase / Balloon Payment – Combines short-term use with potential ownership, featuring lower monthly payments and a final ‘balloon’ payment to own the asset.
For a detailed dive into these options, check out our article: 6 Types of Asset Finance – Finding the Right Solution.
Why Asset Finance Could Be Your Business’s Secret Weapon 🤫
Here’s why asset finance is a gift that keeps on giving:
- Improved Cash Flow – Turn large, upfront costs into manageable monthly payments, freeing up capital for other business needs.
- Access to Better Equipment – Invest in new, high-quality equipment without exhausting your budget, enabling growth and efficiency.
- Tax Advantages – Many asset finance agreements allow you to expense interest payments, claim back VAT, or claim capital allowances meaning you pay less corporation tax.
- Ease of Budgeting – Fixed payments make it easier to plan and forecast your finances, reducing unexpected surprises.
Whether you need cutting-edge technology, fleet upgrades, or essential machinery, asset finance offers a flexible, scalable way to fund your goals.

Day 21: Short-term Finance for the Shortest Day of the Year!🌌✨
Happy Winter Solstice! Today, on Day 21, we celebrate the shortest day of the year by shining a light on how short-term finance can brighten your business prospects. Just as the Winter Solstice marks a turning point toward longer days and brighter horizons, short-term finance can offer quick, flexible solutions to power your business through challenges and to seize new opportunities.
What is the Winter Solstice?
The Winter Solstice, also known as Midwinter, has been a source of wonder and celebration for cultures across the globe throughout history.
- Neolithic Period – Ancient sites like Newgrange in Ireland and Maeshowe in Scotland align perfectly with the sunrise on the Winter Solstice, believed to have been used for rituals honoring the sun’s return.
- Pagan Traditions – Celebrating the rebirth of the sun gods, pagans marked the Solstice with feasting, drinking, and decorating trees to symbolize the sun, moon, and stars.
- Ancient Rome – The Romans flipped societal norms with Saturnalia, a festival of chaos and merriment.
- Anglo-Saxon England – The Solstice festival Mōdraniht (Mother’s Night) marked the start of the Anglo-Saxon year.
- Scandinavia – The festival of Yule brought feasting, drinking, and decorating evergreen trees—a tradition that inspired modern Christmas celebrations.
- Hopi Tribe – Native American Hopi ceremonies, known as Soyal, included dancing, gift-giving, and the lighting of fires.
- Catholic Missionaries – During the Spanish colonial period, churches were built to align with Solstice sunlight, creating rare and awe-inspiring light displays.
🎄 Fun Fact: Many modern Christmas traditions, like the Christmas tree, wreath, and Yule log, trace back to Winter Solstice celebrations.
What is Short-term Finance?
Short-term finance refers to flexible financing solutions designed for immediate needs, with repayment terms typically ranging from 3 to 24 months. It’s perfect for addressing urgent funding gaps, seizing short-term opportunities, or covering seasonal cash flow demands.
Examples of Short-term Financing Options
Short-term finance isn’t just about loans—it includes a wide variety of financial tools tailored to your business’s needs:
- Short-Term Loans – Quick funding for working capital, equipment purchases, or business expansion.
- Bridging Loans – Temporary loans to cover gaps while waiting for longer-term financing or to complete a development project.
- Revolving credit facilities – Flexible credit lines businesses can draw down and repay with a flexible structure.
- Merchant Cash Advance (MCA) – A financing option based on your business’s future card sales, repaid through a small percentage of daily transactions.
- Corporate Tax Loans – Designed to help businesses cover corporate tax bills efficiently.
- VAT Loans – Flexible solutions to fund VAT obligations without disrupting cash flow.

Why Choose Short-term Finance?
Short-term financing isn’t just a last-minute solution; it’s a strategic tool that offers numerous benefits for businesses:

Day 22: Choosing the perfect gift, choosing the perfect finance 🎁
We Can’t Help You Choose The Right Gifts, But We Can Help Choose The Right Finance 🎁
It’s Day 22 and with last-minute gift shopping on everyone’s mind, today’s question is about making the right choice. Can you find the perfect present for Aunt Claire under pressure in a crowded town centre or by browsing online? Can you choose the right finance option for your business in a crowded online marketplace? Or, would you like the help of a personal shopper, or broker?
For example, when it comes to equipment funding do you know the difference between Finance Lease and Hire Purchase (HP)? Let’s wrap-up the details to find out which works best for your business.
Finance Lease vs. Hire Purchase: Which Gift Would You Choose?🎁
When your business needs to acquire assets, whether it’s machinery, equipment, furniture or new technology, a Finance Lease and Hire Purchase are two excellent options. But understanding the difference is key to making the right choice.
What’s the Difference?
👉 Finance Lease – A finance lease allows you to ‘rent’ an asset for a set term, without paying a large deposit and the tax upfront and claiming the monthly repayments as operational expenses for tax purposes. Transfer of ownership is subject to negotiation.
Example: Your business takes a 5 year lease on a pair of forklifts, paying fixed monthly installments. At the end of the term, you can return them and upgrade to a newer model, continue leasing, or negotiate a transfer of title.
Benefits of Finance Leasing
- Lower upfront costs – Lower deposit and no VAT makes getting started much easier.
- Tax deductible – Lease payments can often be treated as operational costs and deducted from your company profit meaning you pay less corporation tax.
- No resale hassle – If you prefer, simply hand back the asset when the lease ends and upgrade.
👉 Hire Purchase (HP) – Hire purchase enables you to buy an asset outright through monthly payments, with full ownership transferred after the final instalment. HP means you will need to pay a deposit and the VAT upfront, but by using a balloon payment at the end of the term, it’s possible to create low monthly payments. Plus, these agreements allow you to claim capital allowances meaning you can write off the value of the asset in the first year and deduct the whole value from company profits and pay less corporation tax (always check with your accountant).
Example: Your business purchases new machinery with a 10% deposit, 20% VAT upfront and a 20% balloon payment to settle in 3 years.
Benefits of Hire Purchase
- Ownership at the end – The asset becomes a valuable long-term investment.
- Lower monthly payments – Having paid or agreed to pay a large proportion of the cost, monthly repayments are typically lower.
- Capital Allowances – Claim tax benefits such as full capital expensing to offset the cost of finance.
Is Finance Lease or Hire Purchase Right for Your Business? 🤔
To sum up:
- 👉 Choose Finance Lease – If low upfront costs and the flexibility of long-term ownership are your priorities.
- 👉 Choose Hire Purchase – If the upfront payments are manageable, the tax benefits appeal, and you aim to own the assets long-term.

Day 24: ‘Twas the Night Before Opportunity: Turning Anticipation into Success ⏰🎉
It’s Christmas Eve and we’re almost at the final stop on our advent journey! Inspired by the timeless tale of “The Night Before Christmas,” Day 24 is all about preparation, anticipation, and ensuring your business is poised to embrace the opportunities waiting just around the corner!
A Brief History of “The Night Before Christmas”
Originally titled “A Visit from St. Nicholas”, this poem was written in 1823 by Clement Clarke Moore (or, as some argue, by Major Henry Livingston Jr.). It captures the magic of Christmas Eve through the eyes of a family preparing for St. Nicholas’ visit. Its charming imagery such as the stockings, the reindeer, and the jolly gift-bringer, has since become central to how we celebrate Christmas.
Much like the poem’s theme of preparation for a magical event, businesses too face their “night before” moments. Whether it’s preparing for growth, investing in critical resources, or gearing up to seize opportunities, success hinges on how well you prepare today.
Preparing your Business for Success
Just as Santa and his sleigh are ready to deliver joy come Christmas morning, your business should be equipped to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future. Whether it’s funding new equipment, securing working capital, or unlocking the potential of a growth project, preparation is key.
